Description: J. W. Benson 18k solid gold mens watch, Excellent condition, Cushion Case, Enamel Dial, with the original box, from 20's - 30's 100% Oiginal - Genuine Up for sale a really impressive and unique old watch with a lot of history especially for the Greeks. This is a J. W. Benson watch made in 18k gold in England circa late 1920's to early 1930's. This watch belonged to George (Georgios) Casanova who was a Piraeus merchant and politician and resided at 7 Gladstone Street in Piraeus (as written on the back of the watch). His family came to the Greek island of Chios from Italy in 1346, specifically from Genoa. His grandfather (George Casanova) had fought and died heroically in the Greek liberating revolution against the Turks in 1822. Shortly afterwards his family left the island and came to Piraeus. George Casanova was born in 1869, who also took the name of his grandfather who had been killed in the Greek-Turkish war. He was elected three times as a Member of Parliament of Greece and for several years was municipal councilor of Piraeus. Today, in his honor, 7 Gladstone Street in Piraeus, where his home and work were located, has been renamed "Georgiou Casanova" Street. The movement of the watch sits in the 18ct gold case and the bezel in screwed down on top of it, probably to attempt to stop any water from going inside the watch. It is a rare and unusual, cushion-shaped, hermetic case design and is signed F.B., for Francis Borgel, is fully hallmarked and measures 31mm (excluding the crown) x 35mm, (between lugs 18.5mm). The case is NOT polished, has normal wear, minimal signs/hairline scratches, in excellent overall condition. Still has the old original gold crown. The old leather strap is in good condition and the clasp it's also 18k gold (which I didn't expect) with the French 18k gold purity hallmark (the eagle's head), on the side!The original, white, enamel dial has lumed, Arabic numerals with a railway-style, outer minute tracking, squelette-style blued hands and subsidiary seconds. It has NO hairlines that I can see with the eye and is in excellent condition. The dial is fully signed J W BENSON LONDON and SWISS MADE at 12 o'clock. It's powered by the mechanical manual wind Tavannes caliber, which is in excellent condition and running strongly with very good accuracy.It will come with it's own old worn, but original box.
