Description: A small solid kiri wood (paulownia) storage box originally used for Edo era coins. The hardware is handmade. (The square nails are the indication of this) This shows that this is from the Edo era. Early to late 1800's. (Round nails were started in the very late 1800's, the Meiji era). The top has "Copper Coin Box" written in Japanese. These were the most common low domination coins used in the Edo era. These were round copper coins with a square hole in the middle. Written on the inside lid is most likely someone's name. (Difficult to read) Except for the chip on the underside of the lid, to the left of the lock latch it's in very good condition. It comes with a working key. All the wood is 7/16" thick. Outside dimensions are 7" x 4 1/4" wide and 3" high. Inside dimensions are 6 1/8" x 3 1/2" wide and 2 /38" deep We have been selling Japanese antiques for 26 years and are shipping from Los AngelesWe have other antique/vintage Japanese items on ebay.
