Presented in the Left Bank hôtel particulier of the Paris hostess São Schlumberger, John Galliano presented a career-making collection that fused the East and West of Japanese kimonos and glamorous 1940s-style tailoring. Due to a lack of funds for materials and time, John Galliano chose to invest in a bolt of black satin-back crepe, which was inexpensive, lightweight. One side was smooth and the other side was rough. Galliano used both sides to create the illusions that he had fabric more than he actually did. John Galliano's Fall 1994 collections is now widely regarded as one of the defining moments in fashion history.
