Description: [JOHN GRAHAM ARCHITECT, BANK OF CALIFORNIA BUILDING - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, LOCAL LANDMARKS] ~ ORIGINAL JOHN GRAHAM ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING FOR THE BANK OF CALIFORNIA BUILDING IN SEATTLE WASHINGTON ~We're proud to offer an ORIGINAL John Graham architectural drawing for the Bank of California Building completed in 1924 (plans dated December 1923). The drawing measures 26.5 in x 42.75 in. The drawing is executed on drafting linen and is done in drafting pen. There is a minor linen loss in the lower right corner (as shown) and several closed tears to the margins. The frame this was found in necessitated it being folded on the left edge which caused a minor, closed fold separation which is nearly undetectable. The right and lower right edge are soiled which is usually indicative of being the working plans used during construction. John Graham is among the most famous Seattle architects, and one of the most esteemed American architects in history. His firm having designed some of the most iconic Seattle buildings including the Space Needle. This sheet of plans is related to the ceiling design for the for the Bank Room and the side panels for the same room (we assume what we'd call the 'lobby' ?) A rare and important artifact worthy of framing and display in a Seattle or Tacoma area banking, real estate, construction, or architectural firm office environment. It is located mid-block adjoining the Exchange Building. It was built by the Bank of California (predecessor to the Union Bank of California) in 1924 and has been continually used as a bank ever since. It housed the offices for the Bank of California until 1973 when a new building, the Union Bank of California Center was built at the corner of 4th and Madison Streets. Ironically, this newer, larger building is no longer used as a bank and instead is occupied by a Bartell Drugs store.The original Bank of California Building was retained as a branch office until being sold to the Puget Sound Mutual Savings Bank in 1982 which was headquartered in the building until 1993 when through a series of mergers and acquisitions the bank became a branch of Key Bank, which it remains to present day.The Building is a rectangular two Story plus basement Reinforced concrete building faced with terra cotta meant to imitate stone. It features a sky-lit banking room that spans all floors and includes a mezzanine. It was designed in a "strict Italian Renaissance" style typical of many banks in the 1920s by John Graham & Company, one of Seattle's most prominent architectural firms.
