Description: John Leech (1817-1864); "William Inspecting the Volunteers previous to the Invasion of England"; hand colored etching from the "Comic History of England"; text by Gilbert Abbott A"Beckett (1811-1856); published by Punch Magazine, printed by Bradbury and Evans; 1855. One of ten colored etchings that appeared in volume one of the "History". Originally published in 1847-48, this became an extremely popular series of comic prints that appeared in Punch, along with "The Comic History of Rome". Leech, who worked with the great George Cruikshank, was a prolific etcher, wood engraver and lithographer, reached his height in etching with the "Histories" along with his work for an edition of Dicken's "Christmas Carol".Sheet 8 7/8 x 5 1/2"; plate 5 3/4 x 4 1/2". Very fine condition with still vibrant colors, wide margins, age appropriate toning.
