Description: This is an early copy of one of Spode’s patterns. Since there were no protections for ceramic designs in England at this time, factories took the liberty of copying one another. If one factory had a popular design, others were likely to reproduce it as their own, and that’s what happened with this plate. This blue-printed Italian pattern was first produced by Spode in 1816, and quickly gained popularity. John Mare’s pottery in Shelton, Staffordshire, copied it exactly—and he wasn’t the only one. The plate is nine and three-quarters inches in diameter, with the maker’s name on the back and an impressed mark of five wedge shapes in a circle. No damage, but very light stains and crazing. Ref C355.
