Description: Land patent dated March 1, 1855, issued to John C. Noel of Jefferson County, Illinois, for forty acres of land in Shawneetown, Illinois. Secretarial signature of President Franklin Pierce at bottom, along with that of H. E. Baldwin, Secretary of the General Land Office. Folded. Approximately 10” x 16”. In good condition with minor wear to parchment or vellum, primarily along folded edges. A a few tiny holes have been worn through at the creased areas. Please see photographs for details, and feel free to ask any questions. Originally signed by presidents themselves, a backlog of thousands of land grants led Andrew Jackson to delegate signing the documents to his secretaries, a practice that continued in subsequent administrations. This document was among some papers belonging to a my great-great-grandfather, who was a lawyer in Illinois. I don’t know of any family connection, but John C. Noel may have been one of his clients. This item will be shipped folded, as it has remained this way for many years in stable condition. Info about John C.
