McCORMACK - DOCUMENT SIGNED CIRCA 1963 - HFSID 48629 JOHN W. McCORMACK. Photocopy signed: "John W. McCormack" in ink, 1p, 11x8. Reproduction of a letter from President Lyndon Johnson to McCormack as Speaker of the House of Representatives, detailing the circumstances in which McCormack would resign as Speaker to act as President. The White House, 1963 December 23. In part: "Confirming our oral agreement regarding the procedures to be followed in the event of my inability to exercise the powers and duties of the Presidency, I am reducing the agreement to writing and would appreciate your signing the original of this letter and returning it to me for safekeeping in the Presidential files. Enclosed for your use is a signed duplicate original." The letter, which goes on to detail four points, is signed in facsimile by Johnson and McCormack. McCormack has signed in ink at blank area beneath LBJ's signature. An initialed ink note (unknown hand) on verso (light show through at upper left margin) states that McCormack signed this photocopy in Boston on July 11, 1979. McCormack (1891-1980), U.S. Representative from Massachusetts (1928-1971), was Speaker of the House from 1963-1971. After the assassination of President Kennedy, he was second in line for the Presidency for over a year (November 1963-January 1965). Usual light photocopying marks. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso.
