JOHN WANAMAKER - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 10/19/1885 - HFSID 67782 JOHN WANAMAKER Wanamaker signed this letter to a Charles Mercer Hall on his personalized stationery in 1885. This letter was in response to Hall's complaints about a chair; Wanamaker explained that the perceived flaws were actually features but "if it is not satisfactory I would a great deal rather refund the money to you and take it back". Manuscript letter signed: "Yours truly,/Jno Wanamaker", 1p, 7¾x10, on Wanamaker's personalized stationery. Also signed with ink notations in left corners in unknown hands. October 19, 1885. Addressed to Charles Mercer Hall. In full: "Dear Sir On receipt of your letter, I sent immediately out to see the Chair, and think that you have been misinformed about the plush being pieced. I am in=formed that there is no piece there, but simply the crease in the fold of the plush which you will find in all plush, as it comes in boxes. The substitution of gimp or braid for the cord was to make a better job, and at greater cost to us; we took pains to get the chair exactly right, but if it is not satisfactory I would a great deal rather refund the money to you and take it back, as I want to have you quite pleased with anything that comes from the Store." John Wanamaker (1838-1922, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an American businessman who, in 1875, established the first department store, bringing a collection of specialty stores together under one roof in the former freight depot of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Philadelphia. Wanamaker, who was one of the first major retailers to employ advertising agencies to sell his goods, was also a leader in offering "fringe benefits" to his employees, who enjoyed paid vacations, health care, life insurance, pensions and financial aid for further education. As Postmaster General under President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893), he issued the first commemorative stamps (over protests from Congress) and proved that they could be moneymakers. Lightly toned and creased. Random ink stains. Slightly foxed on upper portion of verso, light show through at blank area. Adhesive residue and paper loss on verso. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: JOHN WANAMAKER See more listings in our BUSINESS & FINANCE (1,166) category.
