Signed by the Eighth Air Force’s first combat Commanding Officer - IRA EAKER! Your chances of ever finding another copy of this 46 year old print in mint condition are slim to none! This is the only full print edition Ira Eaker lived to sign. I can only think of one other print edition where he signed a very small fraction of the prints. A true treasure. Certainly a treasure that will be even more sought after the Tom Hanks / Steven Spielberg “Masters of the Air” miniseries was released on January 26, 2024. And take a good look at the artwork. It’s truly stunning. John Young was one of the best artists to paint aviation scenes. Promoted to brigadier general in January 1942, he was assigned to organize the VIII Bomber Command (which became the Eighth Air Force) in England and to understudy the British system of bomber operations. Then, in December 1942, he assumed command of the Eighth Air Force. In a speech he gave to the British that won him favorable publicity, he said, "We won't do much talking until we've done more fighting. After we've gone, we hope you'll be glad we came.” Eaker's position as commander of the Eighth Air Force led to his becoming the model for the fictional Major General Pat Pritchard in the 1949 movie Twelve O'Clock High. I have included a picture showing photos from the signing event back in 1978. Note that these photos are not included in the auction, but the pictures are shown as provenance for the signatures on this print. You can see photos of both wartime 8th AF commanders - Ira Eaker & Jimmy Doolittle with the paintings and artist John Young in the background. One of the photos is even signed by Eaker to Virginia Bader along the edge. A little bit of history for this print! Never framed, stored flat in a non-smoking, climate-controlled environment.
