The term Op Art was coined by the art critic working for Time magazine in response to the exhibition Julian Stanczak: “Optical Paintings held at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York in 1964.” Provenance: Alice Simsar Gallery, Ann Arbor. Julian Stanczak (1928-2017) was a Polish-born American painter and printmaker who was one of the central figures in the development of Op art movement. The artist lived and worked in Seven Hills, Ohio with his wife, the sculptor Barbara Stanczak. Per the artist, "My primary interest is color - the energy of the different wavelengths of light and their juxtapositions. Color is abstract, universal - yet personal and private in experience." Stanczak's artworks are in countless private and public collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
