Description: This is a rare broadside (single page playbill) from the JULIUS MONK musical revue "PIECES-OF-EIGHT" which opened September 17th, 1959 at the Upstairs at the Downstairs in New York City ..... The revue starred CEIL CABOT, JANE CONNELL, DEL CLOSE, GERRY MATTHEWS, GORDON CONNELL and ELLIE WOOD with WILLIAM ROY and CARL NORMAN at the pianos and featuring Miss ESTELLE PARSONS ..... Historical note: In a series of New York supper clubs and cabarets, JULIUS MONK was the most celebrated host, creating a breeding ground for some of the country's best comedy and musical talents. Monk's first revue "Four Below", which opened in 1956 at the Downstairs Room on 51st Street, was a huge hit starring Dody Goodman and was quickly followed by "Take Five" (1957). Monk took up residency at Upstairs at the Downstairs with "Demi-Dozen" (1958), "Four Below Strikes Back" (1959), "Pieces of Eight" (1959), "Dressed to the Nines" (1960) and "Seven Come Eleven" (1961). In 1962, Monk parted ways with Upstairs at the Downstairs (which remained a popular New York entertainment spot for thirty years) and opened the Rendezvous Room at the Plaza Hotel. Among his successes at the Plaza were "Just For Openers" (1965) starring Madeline Kahn" and "Mixed Doubles" (1966) .....
