Description: Former employees of the Dunbar Glass Co. formed the Kanawha Glass Co. in 1955 after Dunbar closed in 1953. The new company was located in West Virginia and named after the Kanawha River. At first Kanawha produced colorless cut and etched glass items. By the 1960’s it competed with Blenko, Rainbow, Pilgrim, Viking and other popular mid-20th century glass makers producing colorful stylized retro mod forms. Kanawha provided the fashionable glass of the time offering many forms in crackle glass, a wide array of bright colors and exaggerated forms. In the 1970’s opaque cased glass was popular and Kanawha produced decors such as Peachblow and Milk Glass. Molds were often used and the molded items are recognizable by their distinctive base. Kanawha Glass offered hand blown forms also, but they are hard to find today. Kanawha was purchased by another glass company in 1987 and closed its doors forever in 1989.
