A highly respected lithographer and etcher, Karl Schrag studied as the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Geneva (1931), the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris (1932) and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere (1931-1935). He then completed his education at The Art Students League, New York, when he emigrated to the United States in 1938. Karl Schrag became an American citizen in 1944. During his career, Karl Schrag both traveled and taught extensively. In this latter vein, he was an instructor at both Columbia University and at Brooklyn College. In 1950, he was also appointed Director of New York's prestigious Atelier 17. For over fifty years the paintings and original prints of Karl Schrag were featured in many major international exhibitions. Today his art is in most prominent institutions, the most important being the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Los Angeles County Museum, Library of Congress, Washington, DC, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, the Institudo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
