Description: Kenesaw Mountain Landis [1866 1944] was an American jurist who appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt as a United States Federal judge from 1905 to 1922. In 1920 he was appointed as the first Commissioner of Baseball and served until his death in 1944. He is well remembered for his handling of the Black Sox Scandal, when he expelled eight members of the Chicago White Sox's from organized baseball for conspiring to lose the 1919 World Series. His firm actions and iron rule over baseball during his near quarter century of his commissionership are generally credited with restoring public confidence in the game. Listed for auction is a hand drawn portrait signed by Kenesaw Mountain Landis. The portrait was drawn by well-known artist M. H. Herin [1897 ?], who was also an autograph collector. Herin would complete a portrait and then send it to the subject for them to autograph. This example is hand drawn in pencil and is signed below his image ''Kenesaw M Landis'' in black fountain pen. The portrait is also signed by the artist, ''M.H. Herin'' and dated ''1934''. The portrait measures approximately 9.25 x 12.00 inches and is affixed to a card. The portrait has some wrinkling/handling wear, but most if not all, is around the portrait and below the autograph. Overall, in very good condition and if matted and framed it will display perfectly with the above noted faults not shown. The autograph is authentic and rare to obtain, the sketch is done by a noted artist of the period, and it is a desirable example of the first Baseball Commissioner and will look wonderful in a framed display.
