Description: Kraeuter & Company was founded by August Kraeuter, a German immigrant who came to America in 1859. By 1904 the company was a respected manufacturer of quality tools, especially pliers. Much of the mid-20th century history of the company has been lost. In the 1960s Kraeuter was acquired by Dresser. Kraeuter became a major manufacturer of pliers in the early 20th century. It was one of the first manufacturers to use an alloy steel for its hand tools, as early as 1916 and specifically nickel steel, prior to a wider use by other companies in the 1920s. They are also well-known for patterned handles which they referred to as “Beauty Grips”. It is the lack of such a grip that helps to identify the age of the this 1830-5. Most significant for determining age is the Branding (KRAEUTER) and Model Number (1830-5) in a circular pattern around the edge of the Pivot Point and with “USA” stamped across the center (see images). This style was initiated in 1946. Lacking sufficient additional reference material we can only say that the Side Cutter was produced no earlier than 1946 and no later than 1959 when branding and numbering was changed again. In the Kraeuter’s 1939 Catalog the 1830-5 Pliers were known as “Side Cutting Pliers (https://archive.org/details/KraeuterToolsCatalogNo.181939/page/n11/mode/2up). In 1958 they are named “Electricians’ Side Cutting Pliers” (https://archive.org/details/KraeuterCatalogNo261958/page/n3/mode/2up). The tool is in fully-functional condition. It bears evidence of use and light corrosion (see images), but not of abuse or misuse. The Cutter bears minimal nicks (see images) and the Jaws close properly and parallel with a 1mm parallel space between them (see images). The Pivoting action is smooth with light tightness at fully-open. There is no lateral looseness in the Pivot Point. This Side Cutter could be put to work or added to a Show-and-Tell Collection and would serve well either way, but the Pliers are likely to become a frequent-use tool simply because of quality and size. It’s one of those tools that we encounter that we consider keeping. We recognize, though, that it’s meant to be in other hands. We will ship the Side Cutter by USPS Ground Advantage on the next regular business day following receipt of payment.
