[Broadside for her Last Appearance Prior to her Sudden Death] Publication: Oakland, CA: Municipal Auditorium, 1944 Description: Printed broadside, mounted on thin board, 11x9" with photo of McPherson looking heavenward. Wrinkling and a small tear at upper left corner, light soiling but very good. An incredible ephemeral piece directly linked to the sudden death of one in Los Angeles of the first half of the 20th century, Aimee Semple McPherson (1890-1944). Sister Aimee was a Pentecostal evangelist and faith healer from Canada who moved to Los Angles after several successful revivals there, including at the 3,500 seat Temple Auditorium on Pershing Square. After her followers built a home for her and her family there, she more or less built a Christian empire, spreading her message to tourists as well as the city's burgeoning population. She built one of the early megachurches called Angelus Temple, in Echo Park, which received 40 million visitors within the first seven years of operation. In 1923, she founded the Foursquare Church denomination, and pioneered the use of broadcast mass media for disseminating religious services. As a highly publicized star in Tinseltown, she even incorporated popular entertainment and stage technique into her live sermons. In September of 1944, McPherson went to Oakland for a series of revivals, in which according to the broadside, she would preach her popular messages "The Story of My Life," "V-Day," "Cry Unto the Lord," and "High Voltage." However, her son found her unconscious with sleeping and other pills which she had been prescribed, and some including secobarbital which she had not, nearby. The autopsy revealed a heart attack, likely caused by an overdose which some speculated to be a suicide, but which was generally thought to be accidental. This broadside advertises 4 revivals which, due to Sister Aimee's life being cut short, never happened. An important piece of memorabilia from this influential Los Angeles figure. McPherson continues to pique the interest of many, with films, tv shows, musicals, and books being produced about her life today. .
