Description: Porcupine Quill Mirror bag/ tobacco bag from famous Indian quill work artist. This was purchased at the Santa Fe Indian Market directly from Dorthy Brave Eagle-Ross. Dorthy passed to the Spirit World Sept. 2021. Dorthy has her bead work at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC. Her quill work uses porcupine quill that are harvested, cut and died . She is the premier artist for her "Horse Mask". These were used by warriors to protect their horses. Dorothy was an international award winning artist who specialized in quill work and bead work. She retired from the BIA serving as a Superintendent and Administrative Officer. She resided in Denver, CO most of her adult life. As a young girl, she enjoyed riding her favorite horse, “Dish Pan.” She was a Traditional dancer and traveled the pow-wow trail. She was very active in her traditional ways and passed this down to her daughters and grandchildren. I asked Dorthy if her children were learning her trade and like mos parents, she wasn't sure. Many had college degrees. I looked forward to seeing her once a year at the Annual Indian Market. I hope to see her in Heaven.
