Description: Langley's history falls into two distinct periods. The former covers the years 1916 to 1946, the latter, 1946 to present. The break came at the close of World War II when Langley Field receives the mission to house Headquarters, Tactical Air Command. The year 1946 saw the arrival of jet aircraft, while the preceding year had witnessed the beginning of the atomic age; a new era of air power had arrived, The following year, 1947 the United States Air Force became an official independent branch of the Department of Defense. The early years on Langley Air Force Base, called Langley Field until 1948 are among the most important and interesting of Langley's past. The authors envisioned a dual aspect of this monograph. First, the narrative was intended to present within a book of moderate length as complete a coverage of Langley's early history as possible. The information was chosen to appeal to the widest audience, professional and amateur military historians, airplane enthusiasts, and general readers. Secondly, the photographs were chosen both to elucidate the narrative and to add information not specifically mentioned in the text.
