Description: Large Friedrich Lippmann (1838-1903) etched life-sized copy of Girolamo Mocetto’s exceedingly rare Renaissance engraving masterpiece Baptism of Christ (1490-1530). Mocetto created and engraved his painterly image in copper based on a Giovanni Bellini composition of 'Baptism' in S.Corona, Vicenza. German art historian and director of the Kupferstichkabinett (Berlin State Museums), Friedrich Lippmann produced this heliogravure between 1886 and 1892. He was a big proponent of creating 3-dimensional, etched replicas of great but extremely rare Renaissance works to achieve wider distribution and appreciation. He worked with Reichsdruckerei in the 1800s using the same process by which Amand Durand produced intaglio facsimiles in Paris. The etched plate Lippmann made to print this was so accurate, even the mended tears at the edges of Mocetto's original Renaissance work were photo-etched into the copper and printed into the paper – if you gently feel the paper surface, you’ll realize they’re not actually tears in the printed area, but recreations of the tears in the particular Renaissance impression from which he created this work. Browning at edges of the paper; a small actual tear at the very top of the sheet and 3 small tears at far right, well outside the plate area; stamps of the verso, all shown in the photos. Image: 19.125 x 13.9 inches; platemark: 19.6 x 14.38 inches; sheet: 21.85 x 15.75 inches Shipped in archival glassine in a heavy-duty tube. Thank you for looking.
