Description: A LARGE 7 7/8" tall cylinder-shaped deep COBALT BLUE colored old bottle that is EMBOSSED UPSIDE DOWN, has an original UPSIDE DOWN paper label, and another paper label that is partially UPSIDE DOWN (see pictures). This bottle goes with the large counter-top dispensers that used to sit on the top of the soda fountains of the old drug stores. It was sold one dose at a time. According to several old timer's, Bromo Seltzer was the world's GREATEST HEAD - ACHE CURE known to mankind until the Pure Food and Drug Administration shut it down in the later 1900's. This bottle came out of an old pioneer-town pharmacy museum and the labels on some of the bottles had been copied from original bottle labels ( * see below). The bottle is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown-glass bottle with a lug top dating back to early - mid part of the 20th century. Bottle is embossed ( UPSIDE DOWN ) around base, on heel : "BROMO - SELTZER / EMERSON DRUG CO." Labels read ( UPSIDE DOWN ) in part: "BROMO-SELTZER ... FOR SIMPLE HEADACHE ... Emerson Drug Company Baltimore City, Maryland ... " Baltimore CITY, Maryland Condition: Bottle has age wear/haze from age/use and it has a significant chip missing from the lip which was not realized at time of photo'ing so no pictures shows it. The chip is completely covered by the tin cap but it is there. The label's look like they've been lightly sprayed with an acrylic to preserve them. Otherwise the bottle is in good solid condition with NO damage. Please see picture's to get overall idea of bottles appearance/condition. Age: An ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown glass (ABM) bottle with a lug top (pre-screw-top), ca early-mid 1900's.Shipping: FREE domestic shipping. This is important for foreign buyers to know as most of our foreign shipping charges are estimates. We do not falsify information on the Customs Form, such as a price other than what the actual purchase price is, so please do not request us to do so. We ship several times a week and your prompt payment will hasten the turn-around time. This bottle is a dispenser bottle that sat upside-down on one of the early Bromo Seltzer dispensers that could be found in early American drug store soda fountains. A customer would pay for one dose and the dispenser would dispense one dose (heaping teaspoon) at a time, into a glass that sat under it. Then soda water was added to the glass and there you have it. * This particular bottle is from an old pharmacy building's display. Some of the bottles had reproduced label's on them and others were original. This label may or may not be original to the bottle though it looks appropriate. The label explains a lot about the bottle and the product in the bottle. The upside down label validates the upside down embossing. Here is some additional information that we found out about the product, Bromo Seltzer, and its inventor, Issac Emerson:"Bromo-Seltzer (acetaminophen, sodium bicarbonate, and citric acid), was a brand of antacid to relieve pain occurring together with heartburn, upset stomach, or acid indigestion. First produced by inventor Isaac E. Emerson's drug company of Baltimore, Maryland, in 1888, Bromo-Seltzer was sold in the United States in the form of effervescent granules which must be mixed with water before ingestion. The product took its name from a component of the original formula, sodium bromide. Each dose contained 3.2 mEq/teaspoon of this active ingredient. Bromides are a class of tranquilizers that were withdrawn from the U.S. market in 1975 due to their toxicity. Their sedative effect probably accounted for Bromo-Seltzer's popularity as a remedy for hangovers. Early formulas also used, as the analgesic ingredient, acetanilide, now known as a poisonous substance." Note too that Baltimore is referred to as "Baltimore City" on the label. Here is some info. we found about this: "Bromo-Seltzer's main offices and main factory were located in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, at the corner of West Lombard and South Eutaw Streets. The factory's most notable feature was the clock tower, built in 1911, which featured "BROMO-SELTZER" in place of the numerals on all four clock faces. The tower originally held a 50 foot tall Bromo-Seltzer bottle on top, glowing blue and rotating. The bottle/sign weighed 20 tons and included over 300 incandescent light bulbs, topped with a crown. The sign was removed in 1936 because of structural concerns."Wonder where the 50 foot bottle is today? Anyway, a great history. You can find the dispenser's listed on eBay from time to time, the older ones have a cobalt blue glass base that is embossed similarly to the bottles. Then too the drinking glasses that were supplied to accompany the dispensers were also made of blue glass, and had the "BROMO-SELTZER" name enameled, applied, or painted on the side of them. The drinking glasses are few as reflected in the prices, see "seller's other items", as we have a set of each style from different ages. * This bottle is from an old pharmacy building on display in an old Frontier Town. Some of the bottles had reproduced label's on them and others were original. This label may not be original to the bottle though it looks appropriate. The label explain a lot about the bottle and the product in the bottle. These large dispenser bottles are few and far in between with labels, only so many survived the 'ravages' of time with paper label intact, check it out!Terms of Sale: Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction.
