Description: Lassie Come-Home by Eric Knight, 1st Ed. 22nd printing, HC no DJ rough condition. Lassie, probably the most well-known literary dog character, was introduced in Eric Knight's 1938 short story, which he expanded into this novel in 1940. (Some people argue that Knight borrowed the character from Elizabeth Gaskell's short story "The Half Brothers," but the owners of the Lassie IP naturally disclaim any connection.) Anyhoo, Lassie has gone on to become a wildly popular character in television, film, novels, and comic books. This novel is where it all started. This copy is a "reader copy," which is book-seller for "very rough condition but intact." The cloth binding is solid and there are no major tears nor any defects that impede comfortable reading. Other than that, the book is in tough shape. There is no dust jacket. The cloth boards show major wear, including many places where the cloth is worn through and/or unraveled. The frontispiece is missing (which is too bad, because it's a beautiful full-color painting, the same used on the original dust jacket. It can be viewed here: https://www.abebooks.com/first-edition/LASSIE-HOME-Eric-Knight-illust-Marguerite/30257036514/bd#&gid=1&pid=2 The front endpapers show significant staining and damage to the paper (though, again, nothing that impedes the integrity of the book.) There are signs of its ex-library status including a place where a library card appears to have been removed and the word "DISCARD" stamped on the inside front ep. The text block is in good condition with only minor discoloration and a few small stains. So - a fine reader copy of a later printing of the first edition of a truly classic novel. All books are individually evaluated and photos are of the actual book.
