Description: Late 19th century sampler by Ellen Bartle aged 8 - 1887. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Ellen was just eight years old when she completed it. Ellen has stitched a cream coloured background with a floral motif to the centre of the upper section with its topmost blooms flanked by a diamond, bird and tulip and a flower and the date of Dec 1877 to the left and right of its lower blooms with a star and dog nearby. The remainder of the gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches, their names beside them. Ellen's name, her age and her date of birth - August 19th 1879 - are stitched around the foliage of the Tree whilst Adam and Eve have a cross with the initials NO above and below next to them, both crosses with a crown above. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep strawberry border.There are a few small areas of stitch loss to the cream background and one is able to see through these that the gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The cream background is also very slightly darker around Adam's head. The sampler is contained within a mid 20th century stained pine frame which is in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age.
