About the Book:Not only does this book tell the story of the First National Bank of Layton opened its doors for business on May I5, 1905, it tells the story of Layton, Utah. It contains many current and vintage photos showing how the town (and Bank) grew over the years. From the books front and back flaps:The First National Bank of Layton opened its doors for business on May I5, 1905 during the period between 1888 and 1920 that historian Roland Stucki calls Utah’s “era of bank expansion.” At the close of 1887, Utah Territory had but eight private banks, two territory chartered banks, and seven nationally chartered banks. In 1905, eleven state banks and two national banks opened. Beginning in the year 1905, First National Bank of Layton was organized through 1920. Layton’s bank was the sixteenth national bank to open in Utah, which saw a “constant increase in the number of operating banks.” This centennial history, A Century of Putting People First, is the story of fair-minded businessmen, related by family ties—with one notable exception—James Pingree. Among them were farmers, ranchers, and cattlemen. All were committed to a vision of growing their community along with the bank, from which all would prosper. ‘The Twentieth Century dawned with unbridled enthusiasm and a “can-do” attitude. Although First National had to overcome the effects of a devastating windstorm that destroyed its building just 18 months after opening, the little country bank grew and flourished over the decades. This book is an intimate, decade-by-decade look at First National’s progress in overcoming the effects of world wars, economic upheavals, management changes, increased regulatory oversight, and intense competition. A Century of Putting People First is sure to be enjoyed by anyone who likes a good history story. Gleaned from I00 years of board minutes and the personal memories of board members, customers, and employees, it parallels Layton, Utah's history. The bank’s first branch outside of its home territory didn’t occur until 90 years after the bank was organized, yet such expansion and service had been foretold decades earlier.
