Leucadendron salicifolium Seedling Plant - Willow-Leaved Leucadendron

Description: Leucadendron salicifolium (Willow Leaf Leucadendron) PLEASE NOTE - PROTEAS AND THEIR RELATIVES ARE DIFFICULT PLANTS TO GROW AND MAINTAIN. THE YOUNG PLANTS I AM SELLING ARE IN PERFECT CONDITION AND HEALTH AT THE TIME OF SHIPPING. I ONLY GUARANTEE SAFE ARRIVAL - BUT OFFER NO GUARANTEE FOR THEIR SURVIVAL. Also... the plants being shipped are coming from a very cool climate, with summer daytime temperatures in the low to mid 60s to low 70s, with temps rarely exceeding 75. If you are in a hot climate, or are inexperienced with these temperamental plants, please refrain from ordering until your temperatures will be compatible, or unless you are able to protect them and give them what they need right away - more plants will be available in spring. Thank you for your understanding. Great for cut flowers, this wonderful tall shrub from a winter rainfall area of South Africa, is found growing from sea-level to 2,800 feet, in damp situations near streams and in acid soil, mainly in sandstone. The shrubs will quickly grow to 10 feet, with erect branches rising from a single stem at ground level, and the small, narrow, yellow-green leaves are somewhat sickle-shaped. The plants are dioecious, so the male and female flowers are on separate plants. The female flowers are solitary green cones, and the males are yellow and solitary, with light colored basal bracts, and measure about 1" across; both are borne on numerous short branchlets, and surrounded by short involucral bracts. The flowers appear from about December to March and, rare in Leucadendron, are wind pollenated - I've even had the plants reseed in our cool, northern California climate, much to my amazement and delight. The shrubs are attractive and have a graceful and airy (Willowy) appearance, and the branches of flowers, especially the males, make wonderful additions to flower arrangements. Please note that the sex of the seedlings is unknown until they bloom, and by ordering several you will, pretty much, be assured that you will have at least one of both sexes. Relatively easy to grow, this fine shrub may bloom within 3 years of planting! Hardy zones 9 and above. Not suitable for growing in pots. Requires excellent air movement - will even tolerate coastal wind. Very rare in cultivation in the US! The family name, Proteaceae, honors the Greek Sea God, Proteus, who had the power to assume a great diversity of shapes - a reference to the diversity within this wonderful genus. This offer is for one, small, first year seedling, in a 2" x 7" tube pot. Ready for transplanting into a gallon pot (for a season), or directly into the garden (preferred). The new year's growth is starting to show, or is already underway. The Seedlings shipped will vary in size , but are mostly 6+" tall. Detailed growing instructions are included. As the plants are grown unprotected outdoors, some of the leaves may show a few blemishes or nibbles, and the leaves may take on some maroon tints in the winter and early spring. All photos are of plants among my collection, unless stated otherwise. The flower photos show male flowers. The last photo shows a batch of various seedlings and variation in heights of seedlings, which is dependent on species. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING - SORRY - I ONLY SHIP TO THE US. I do combine shipping for multiple items - please request a new shipping total before checking out. Please Note: requesting combined shipping can not be done on a phone - the request must be made from a computer or tablet. (For some reason, the ebay phone app doesn't allow it. ) I automatically combine shipping for multiple orders - Before ordering, please read all information under the STORE POLICIES section, regarding Shipping and Handling Fees and Combined Shipping. Thank you! Upon arrival of the seeds/cutting/plant, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. I want you to be happy with your purchase and to have the greatest success in its cultivation! Robert
