Description: Here is an original book entitled Life In Christ and it was written by Edward White and was published in 1878 and is the third edition. An earlier printing of this book was featured in two articles in the February 1, 1854, Bible Examiner on page 48 (I am including a picture so you can see for yourself). It's interesting that George Storrs used this book as a source of material to teach important Bible truths to his audience. At the request of George Storrs, Edward White also published a long article in the June 1, 1854, Bible Examiner. At the preface to that article George Storrs calls this book an Excellent work which is high praise coming from George Storrs! Mr. White also had a long article in the January 1852 Bible Examiner entitled Death Cessation of Life. The purpose of this 544-page book was to disprove the teaching of an immortal soul and to put out the flames of a burning hell by proving that it is not based on the Bible teachings. Here are a few interesting details found in this book: In the Preface on page vii to ix he cites a former Roman Catholic priest who served for twenty years as an Apostolic Missionary in England, Ireland, Scotland and France who said the following concerning the Hellfire doctrine: "I can count on my fingers, the dogma of hell, though firmly believed in by English and Irish Roman Catholics, did no moral or spiritual good, but rather the reverse. ... It caused unceasing mental and moral difficulties, lowered the idea of God, and drove devout persons from the God of hell to Mary. I find the above quote from a Catholic Priest as helpful in understanding why the worship of Mary is so prominent in the Catholic Church! On page 155 he says "But there is not in the law of Moses a sentence, a line, a single syllable, not even a letter, which by any ingenuity of perverse criticism can fairly be made to convey the idea of a threatened eternity of suffering." On page 90 he says "First of all, the animation of man by the breath of God proves the immortality of his soul no more than a similar animation of brutes proves the immortality of their soul. Speaking about Hebrews chapter 11 on page 153 he says "The whole of this wonderful chapter is an elaborate assertion of the faith of the earliest fathers in a future eternal life of the saints, and in a resurrection from the dead. In no single instance is this faith described as reposing on a belief in natural immortality." On page 79 he says "In every modern sermon, prayer, and hymn, you hear of immortal souls, and every modern address to men is founded on a declaration of their immortality; it is not so in one of the many books which compose the Bible. And not only is the word not used, or any equivalent in Hebrew or Greek, but no single expression of Scripture can be pointed out in which man's natural immortality is affirmed directly or indirectly. On page 73-74 he describes how ancient civilizations such as the Egyptian, Chinese, Indian and others including Socrates in Greece and even Germany before Christianity arrived believed in an immortal soul. On page 398-399 he says "In summing up the result of this inquiry, it must be allowed, first of all, that nearly every presumptive physical argument is on the side of those who think that death ends consciousness and terminates individuality; and that the survival of the thinking power in the dissolution of the humanity is contrary to the analogy of the living creation to which man belongs. Death, too, as the original penalty of sin, was doubtless death in the most absolute sense of the term. And more! He did not fully understand the Bible today like we do and was in fact, incorrect on some things, but in this 544-page book he bravely shows that there is no immortal soul and no burning hell. Interesting also is that he cites publications by Hastings (p. 395), The Rainbow (p. 516) and other books and authors who also stood up against the crowd and promoted true Bible teachings. It is not surprising that George Storrs in the June 1, 1854, Bible Examiner calls this book an Excellent work. --- This book is in VERY NICE condition. There is some ageing and wear on the covers and spine but not much. The embossing on the cover looks very nice. There is some ageing and wear to the pages but not much. There is a former owners name inside and some notes in pencil and some former owner stamps otherwise the pages are SUPER CLEAN! Please look at the pictures as they are part of the description.
