Description: Perhaps better known today through Rossini's opera, Schiller's play about the legendary Swiss marksman William Tell, the quasi-legendary hero of the Swiss struggle for independence from Habsburg domination in the early 14th century, has served to inspire revolutionists even to the present day. In his introduction Carlyle calls this "the first descent of Freedom to our modern world." The famous episode of Tell being forced to shoot an apple placed on his son's head is in the middle of the play, and serves to foreshadow his later assassination of the Habsburg governor, Gessler. (Adolf Hitler is said to have lamented that the greatest German playwright had to immortalize "that Swiss sniper"). One of Macy's efforts to have a classic story printed in the country with which it is associated, the book is thoroughly a Swiss production: designed by W. Diethelm, and printed by the Fretz Brothers in Zurich, illustrated with original lithographs drawn on the stone by Swiss painter Charles Hug. A deluxe production featuring hand-set Diethelm Antiqua type letterpress on Zerkall rag paper with deckled edges, Swiss linen quarter binding and boards covered with a natural wood veneer. Translated from the German in the original meter by Theodore Martin. Introductory Essay by Thomas Carlyle.
