Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ....... This is a rare April 3rd, 1965 program (playbill) from the one-week, Pre-Broadway tryout and WORLD PREMIERE engagement of the JOHN KANDER and FRED EBB musical comedy "FLORA THE RED MENACE" at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The production would open May 11th, 1965 at the Alvin Theatre in New York City and run for only 87 performances.) ..... The musical starred LIZA MINNELLI (in what would be her Broadway debut) and featured BOB DISHY, MARY LOUISE WILSON, CATHRYN DAMON, ROBERT KAYE, STEPHANIE HILL, JAMES CRESSON, DORTHA DUCKWORTH, JOE E. MARKS, LOUIS GUSS, GORDON DILWORTH and MARIE SANTELL ..... Side Note: LIZA MINNELLI would win the 1965 Tony Award for "Best Actress in a Musical" in her Broadway debut ..... CREDITS: Music by JOHN KANDER and Lyrics by FRED EBB (the first collaboration for the songwriting team responsible for "Cabaret", "Chicago", "Zorba", "Woman of the Year", "The Rink", "The Act", "Kiss of the Spider Woman", "70, Girls, 70" and "Curtains" among others); Book by GEORGE ABBOTT and ROBERT RUSSELL based on the novel "Love Is Just Around The Corner" by LESTER ATWELL; Sets designed by WILLIAM & JEAN ECKART; Costumes designed by DONALD BROOKS; Choreographed by LEE THEODORE; Directed by GEORGE ABBOTT; Produced by HAROLD PRINCE ..... DETAILS: The four page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "I Believe You" which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or LIZA MINNELLI fan.
