Description: Long-Tailed African Tody Bird, Hand-Colored Antique Print - Jardine 1840 Authentic antique print with original hand-colored finish. Rescued from a dis-bounded volume of The Naturalist's Library by Sir William Jardine, published in 1840. Some prints from the series might have uneven edges and some wear around the edges, some with losses to the paper. The pages show toning commensurate with age. However, major faults will be mentioned in the description. This would look stunning framed. The back side is blank. Dimensions: Approx.16cm x 10cm - (6.29 inches x 3.93 inches) Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet of Applegirth, Dumfriesshire (23 February 1800, Edinburgh to 21 November 1874, Sandown, Isle of Wight) was a Scottish naturalist. Jardine made natural history available to all levels of Victorian society by editing and issuing the hugely popular forty volumes of The Naturalist's Library (1833-1843). The series was divided into four main sections: Ornithology (14 volumes), Mammalia (13 volumes), Entomology (7 volumes), and Ichthyology (6 volumes); each prepared by a leading naturalist. James Duncan wrote the insect volumes. The artists responsible for the illustrations included Edward Lear. The work was published in Edinburgh by W. H. Lizars. The frontispiece is a portrait of Latreille Jardine's other publications included an edition of Gilbert White's Natural History of Selborne which re-established White's reputation, Illustrations of Ornithology (1825–43), and an affordable edition of Alexander Wilson's Birds of America. Condition: Paper toning in accordance with the print's age. Marks/stains as per scan. Wear around the edges and minor losses to paper might be present in some prints. All the prints from the series originated from an ex-library disassembled volume. Some prints might bear a library seal/watermark as visible by the scans presented. Please refer to each prints scan to get a better understanding of the condition. Shipping PolicyFor all items with a shipping charge we are happy to combine them in one shipment.
