The story she told me about why she was afraid of lightning is as follows: Our grandmother met our grandfather as teenagers in about 1915 or 1916, when he came to help the Arlington, MA Fire Company (captained by his father) put out a fire at my grandmother's childhood home. The fire was caused when a lightning bolt hit the porch, and a porch chair she had just moved her grandmother out of to come inside for the impending thunder storm. She was home alone and caring for her grandmother at the time. She remained terrified of lightning her entire life. They made sure their farm had good lightning rods!!!
