In late 1983, Lydia Lunch and JG Thirlwell-then styling himself as Clint Ruin-presented a series of four live shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland, dubbing them "Swelter." Years later the two would transform this collaboration into the EP Stinkfist, first released on Lunch's Widowspeak label in 1987.
