Description: Malabar spinach (Basella rubra) is not a spinach at all, but a great substitute for those hot summer days when the regular spinach is not producing. A vigorously growing beautiful vine produces edible green leaves that can be eaten raw in salads, added in soups or lightly sauteed. Versatile leaves do not wilt quickly once harvested, making them last for a few days. In zones below 9 it is grown as annual; in zones 9-13 it is a perennial climbing vine, typically needing a trellis for best growth. Once ready to plant, soak seeds overnight and place them about 1/4-1/2 deep; germination occurs in about 10-15 days at68-70F and the plant grows rapidly given full sun and moist garden soil. Produces harvest ready leaves in about 50 days.
