Inner hinge is a little rough and may have been repaired once (Photo 10) Two books combined into one reflecting the middle West Side of Manhattan where boys had a high rate of juvenile delinquency and girls had high rates of other problems. The book was attempting to suggest that some parks and some attempt for "throwing light into dark places" might help both the community and the children involved. The book about the boys has a number of interesting photos with captions while the girl section has only a couple of photos. The books studies the principal influences that have formed the West Side boy and the neglected girl, putting the blame on the entire community in an early social experiment selecting juvenile delinquents and tracing their influences with the idea that punishment of 10 years olds may not be the best policy. Interestingly, The Neglected Girl has a special chapter on The Italian Girl written by a different author, Josephine Roche. She later became a New Deal official, helping to shape the modern American welfare state where she worked in New York City as an anti-child-labor activist. Pauline Goldmark, who oversaw this book, was a social reformer focused on equal pay and the health aspects of women's work and the right to vote for women.
