First edition of the first translation of Plautus' work into French, with Latin and French text on opposing pages - volumes II-IV of 4. In contemporary full leather bindings with bookplate of Charles Lord Maynard on the front pastedown of each. This translation is said to have been used by Moliere.Vol II 418 pp plus index and corrections; Vol III, 401 pp plus index and corrections; Vol IV, 383 pp plus index and corrections. The bindings have raised bands, gilt decoration and title labels to spine. All are worn - with wear to corners, edges and joints which are either cracked or cracking. Internally Vol II has a little damp staining to the bottom margin; Vol III has a repaired tear to the latin title page, a little worming at the beginning which does not affect the text, and damp staining in the bottom corners - more noticeable at the beginning and end of the book; Vol IV is missing a fep and has obvious damp staining to the title pages, early pages and final leaves - less obvious occasional damp stain elsewhere. The rear free endpaper is damaged. All measure 19.2 x 13.4 cms.
