Description: Marie Salut Medal FRENCH Inscription "He who believes in God never fears death" 1-1/8" long This is an interesting medal, and I would love to know more about it. It appears to be a religious military medal. The French inscription reads "O Marie Salut De La France Protegez Nous Dans Le Danger" which seems to be calling upon Mary to Protect Us from Danger. The inscription on the obverse translates "He who believes in God never fears death." The front bears an anchor image with a banner reading SPES, a laurel, and a star. It is signed E. Orville. The obverse features an anchor, what looks like a cannon, 6 staffs with banners, and a cross with the words "in salus cruce" translates "in the cross, salvation." Above the cross is an image of the sacred heart, and above that a ribbon banner bearing the motto Honneur, Religion, Patrie, which I believe is Honor, Religion, Country. There's a shield over the cannon and anchor that bears the word Fidele, and the medal is marked France on this ide. Appears to be copper. Possibly dates back to or refers to the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Would appreciate any light anyone can shed. Very unusual piece. #254
