I was born in SF, but from 6 months old grew up in Sonoma. I was 1 year old when she first opened the shack. It's one of my fondest childhood memories to sit behind the pizza line while the dough was flipped & whirled into the air like a perfectly executed circus. Child spectators sometimes got lucky... and they'd give us a slice of salami. Mary's legacy, contributions to our little hometown, and deep relationships to all our generational Sonoma families have left an everlasting imprint on all of us natives. I PERSONALLY own, and use this cookbook. I eat at the original shack at least twice a month for date night with my sweetheart... who's also Sonoma grown, knew Mary well, and worked for her long ago. Once, she even gave him some gas money. Everyone in our community has a few stories about Mary. If you're ever in wine country, please eat at the Boys Hot Springs location. It's basically the original location, has a BEAUTIFUL outdoor deck and magical string lighting. Summer evenings eating outside there are enough to fill the soul. Make sure to try all her homemade salad dressings. My weakness is the Blue Cheese. Yes... the recipes are in the book! See you there! I hope her legacy lives for decades... but covid hit the food industry, and mom & pop businesses the hardest. Not to mention the low capacity of workers these days. Nearly worthless, it's hard to find anyone worth Jack diddly. Some of her extended locations were closed, if we lose her existing locations, it will be the end. Her legacy will survive only via her family & her cookbook.
