Description: Delightful 21 x piece Coffee Service from Mason's Ironstone "Mandalay" Blue collection - testimony to the sheer artistry and craftsmanship of the Mason's potters. The Service consists of 2.25 pt. Coffee Pot; 6 x Coffee Cups; 6 x Saucers; 6 x Side Plates; Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl. Mason's Ironstone was made by the English pottery of Charles J. Mason, circa 1813, when he was granted a patent for the earthenware. Some experts believe that the name ironstone resulted from the fact that the "wares were as hard as iron" Mason's joined the Wedgwood Group in 1973 and the name is continued on tea and dinner services. All pieces are sumptuously decorated in typical Imari colourway, with Iron Red, Cobalt Blue and generous use of 22 carat gold combining to stunning effect. The Imari pattern embodies many Japanese and Oriental influences. Imari is the port from where it was most convenient to export Japanese porcelain to Europe and America. Gilding to the Coffee Pot footing, rim, spout and stylish handle, lid rim and finial, cup rims and handles, and the saucer and plate rims, is bright and intact. Cups measure 2.25"/5.7cms high and 2.5"/6.5cms in diameter; Saucers 4.6"/11.5cms in diameter and the Side Plates 5.75" / 14.5cms. Slight variation in backstamps, but all include MASON'S / Mandalay / Made in England. Some include "IRONSTONE / MADE IN ENGLAND" on banner.
