SignedShiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Collectible. This vintage kokeshi by Takao-san dates back to circa the 1960s. It features a creative "ume-do" motif and impresses with its simple, yet original and creative design. Kiyohara Takao was an independent and well-established craftsman born in 1916. He is considered a “mystery artist” as little is known about his background or whom he might have studied under. He lived in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture and won multiple awards including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Prize at the All-Japan Kokeshi Contest in 1989. He was also an army pilot and he is considered to have been one of the people who helped pioneer the sosaku kokeshi movement. He is now deceased, date of passing undetermined..
