Died December 5, 1791, in Vienna. The greatest of the 18th century Classical composers - using "Classical" in its original musical sense as a style marked by compactness of form, emotional restraint and a moderate use of musical resources (in contrast to those of later periods). Mozart toured Europe as a harpsichord prodigy at age 7, and had composed an opera, an oratorio, several sonatas, and made his conducting debut by the age of 12. In his teens he traveled to Italy to study and concertize, and then returned to Salzburg and Vienna to settle down as a composer. Throughout his brief life he remained an unusually prolific composer (41 symphonies, 27 piano concertos, 23 string quartets, 18 operas, numerous other solo and instrumental works) with most works unequalled in their Classical elegance, subtlety and melodic invention. Despite favor at court, his income was meager. When he died penniless at the age of 35, he was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave. (Roy Hemming, From Rock to Bach: A Musical Odyssey, 1974) Masters Classic is a European series of full length classical music CD's that are made and marketed primarily in Europe.
