Description: Early original vintage photograph of two officers on board the Matson Navigation Company ship S.S. Enterprise. The officers are identified on the back as B. W. LaFetra and Andrew P. Stone. The Enterprise was 2675 ton iron and steel steamer, built Newcastle, England, 1882 as German EHRENFELS, later renamed ST. GEORGE. Matson bought 1901, sold 1 Mar. 1937 to General Steamship Co. The Enterprise began in the carrying of merchandise, especially of plantation stores, to the islands and returning with cargoes of sugar. This led to gradually expanding interests at both ends of the line. Increased commerce brought a corresponding interest in Hawaii as a tourist attraction. This interest in Hawaii as a tourist destination soon prompted the construction of the Moana Hotel in 1901. More steamships continued to join the fleet. When Captain Matson died in 1917, the Matson fleet comprised 14 of the largest, fastest and most modern ships in the Pacific passenger-freight service. Photograph measures 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches and is in very good condition with no bends, tears, or creases and is sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity. A couple glue spots on back not affecting the image. Please email with any questions and please "VIEW SELLERS OTHER ITEMS". Thanks. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
