Description: McKee Plate 7 1/4" Embossed Waffle Border Opal Custard w/Gold Trim Unmarked 1899 McKee Plate 7 1/4" Embossed Waffle Border 1899 Opal Custard w/Gold Trim Unmarked Exquisite McKee Glass Co. 7 1/4" PLATE in OPAL CUSTARD, Displaying the EMBOSSED WAFFLE BORDER pattern w/GOLD Highlighting, circa 1899 from Jeannette, Pennsylvania, USA DESCRIPTION: This plate is very rare. It is in the opal custard color and shows the swirling of the glass during manufacturing. This shows very strongly as it fluoresces a bright lime yellow under the black light. The pattern is the elusive waffle border and the rim is highlighted in gold. CONDITION: The condition of this McKee plate is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, hairlines, rubbings, or scratches. The gold appears to be as applied to highlight the embossed rim. (See the photos to judge for yourself.) DIMENSIONS: The plate has a diameter of 7 1/4". Its height is 7/8". HISTORY/MARKS: McKee Glass Company was founded in 1853 by brothers, Frederick and James McKee. Eventually 5 McKee brothers were involved in the operation with several name changes. In 1888, they moved to a new factory in Jeannette, PA, a town founded & named for the wife of H. Sellers McKee. In 1899, the McKees were one of the funding members of National Glass Company, but retained production under the McKee name. By 1903, they reorganized as McKee-Jeannette Glass Co. introducing their pres-cut line which simulated costly cut glass at popular prices. By 1906, they were the largest producer of glass tableware in the world. 1910 saw the emergence of the name McKee Glass Co which seemed to stick until the company was purchased in 1951 by Thatcher Glass Co. and in 1961 by Jeannette Glass Company for their own use. This plate is attributed based on its opal custard color and the waffle border pattern to circa 1899. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
