Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a beautiful large Wave Crest Art Glass dresser box in the puffy or egg crate mold by the C. F. Monroe Co., c. 1900. Wave Crest glass was produced as an opal glass blank and was then hand decorated. The box features a pale cream colored background with three medallions on the top hand painted with iridescent blue flowers on a white background and a similar medallion on each of the four sides. The medallions are outlined in a iridescent violet enamel that swags down to each top corner with the same enamel colored swags radiating out from each medallions. At the center top, there is a gilt decorated propeller design. The interior of the box has its original gold silk lining, however, the lining in the base of the box is very worn. The box has a brass ribbed collar with ornate antiqued brass ormolu attached at each corner and sits on four pewter colored fancy metal feet. The hinge is tight and the box opens and closes correctly. Although unmarked, this shape is pictured on pages 88 and 95 of the book "Wave Crest: The Glass of C.F. Monroe" by Wilfred R. Cohen and is guaranteed to be as described. Originally called "Opal Ware", this glass was at the height of its popularity from 1890 to 1910. Much of the opal glass known as Wave Crest was produced by the Mt. Washington Glass Co. and was purchased by the C. F. Monroe Co. as undecorated glass blanks to be decorated by their artists. Measures 5 1/2" high and 4 3/4" square. Weighs 2.6 pounds. The condition of this lovely box is excellent with no noted flaws. The enameled design is crisp and reflects no noted wear, the brass collar, ormolu and feet all have original patina and reflect minor no-harm wear and there is a tiny nick in the glass on the bottom of box. The interior fabric in the base is worn as mentioned above. Please see photos.
