It is profusely engraved into solid bronze throughout. This includes the ornate Russian double-eagle with Christian crosses and opposing northern & southern lions. This is perhaps the best representation of the Russian "heraldic crest" that I have seen. Please note, this is not a cast bronze piece, every detail is hand-engraved, from the latch on the back, to the sides. The hinge is very old, and no screws are present, only hand-hammered bolds from the lid to the lower interior of the piece. The piece is engraved on several levels, from a very fine surface level detail, to a deeper level to accentuate the primary design, and a deeper "dotted" design to set the further accentuate the main design. A masterpiece for a common object. Thorough research cannot find a similar example of matching quality. This is a singular piece, engraved and dated by the artist on the back lid, with proper bronze verdigris on the interior. The amount of time involved in the making of this piece suggests that this was made for royalty. The maker's mark, and incised "L," is found in three places on the back. It is also signed in cyrillic on the back of the lid. SizeThe piece measures 5" tall, and 3.75" wide, and 1.25" deep. It is heavy for its size.. ConditionExcellent original condition, with dents, dings, restorations, or damage. The fine surface level engraving shows wear (as shown in the pictures), likely from dusting and polishing throughout the years. The wear on the fine detail on the upper plate is more extensive, as it rested against the wall, and experienced more surface wear.
