Description: Watercolor. Image 6 x 4 3/4”. Framed – 9 ½ x 7 1/2”. Signed lower right and dated 1909. Fred Hummert San Antonio framing. Titled in pencil lower left. Bertram C. Broome (1873-1941) wrote novels of the southwest and painted while supporting himself as a draftsman. He said he he came to Texas in 1890 and worked on ranches near San Antonio before moving to Mexico. He wrote that he met Frederic Remington in 1893 in Mexico while he was working as a foreman on the large William Randolph Hearst ranch. He said Remington became a close friend and Remington became a 2nd father and he often visited Remington at his home. He worked for a time in Austin as a draftsman/artist in the General Land Office. He said he worked as a foremen on a cattle ranch south of Albuquerque around 1908. Broome later moved to Santa Fe working as a draftsman, painter, and novelist. His works are in the Smithsonian Institution.
