Description: This charming Mexican folk art retablo or exvoto is a naive expression of Catholic faith. Hand painted on tin, it tells the story of a miracle, a milagro. It comes from the Central Highlands state of Guanajuato. We have been collecting the work of this folk artist , Refugio Rodriguez Luna, for some years. It is said that he paints at night and is wheelchair bound. We think it is a "milagro" when we come across his work in unexpected places on our trips to Mexico. His style, although very much in the style of traditional milagros, is distinctive. He uses what is at hand, whether bent or not, in the way that is typical of milagro painters. 9 1/2 by 7 3/8 inches. This one tells the story of being saved from the border patrol by the intervention of the Virgin of Guadalupe
