Description: Original quadriptych color etching and aquatint by Mexican modernist Luis López Loza (b.1939). This limited edition artwork is printed on cream colored wove paper with large margins, the piece is made up of four separate etching plates printed on a single sheet. The margin of the bottom image is signed, dated '69 and numbered by the artist in pencil, each of the other images is initialed in pencil. Please note that this piece is from a tiny edition of only ten proofs. The overall size of the sheet is 22 x 7 1/2 inches, each of the four image plates measures 3 X 3 inches. Aside from some minor surface grime in the margins and tape residue on the reverse, it is in excellent condition with no mat burn or age toning. Luis López Loza was born in Mexico City in 1939. A member of "La Ruptura" or the Breakaway Generation of artists that, starting in the 1950s, rebelled against the Mexican Muralist school of Social Realism that was the academic art norm of the time. He studied at La Esmeralda: National School of Art and also the Center of Applied Arts, both in Mexico. To focus on printmaking, he spent time at the Pratt Graphic Art Center in New York. In 1966 he received Honorary Mention at Casa de las Américas in Havana, and in 1969 in the Triennale of Woodcuts in Italy. In 1973 he received the Biennial of Printmaking Award in Tokyo and, in 1977, the National Printmaking Award in Mexico. Lopez-Loza was honored with a prestigious Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1975. López Loza has had more than forty solo shows in notable galleries in Mexico City, the United States, Japan, Cuba and Spain. His work is represented in the permanent collections of: the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; Casa de las Américas, Havana; Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City, and many others.
