The article stated that there were only 2 known collections of Mike Schmidt. If true that would make this collection one of 3. In April of 2015, We visited the retired Card Dealer that a number of the items had been purchased from over the years. He stated it was the most complete collection he had ever seen. He suggested that we contact Mike Schmidt personally in West Palm Beach. We never contacted Mr. Schmidt, however we are now offering the collection for sale. The story behind this collection is as follows: My Mother in law was an only child that loved to spend time with her father. They shared a common interest in Baseball. She came from a Blue Collar family, and married a man that later spent years coaching baseball and softball locally. Together they raised a set of twins (Boy and Girl) and all family activities revolved around the sport of Baseball. Most Nights/ All Weekends and Holidays were spent at the ballpark. Both their children played the sport and later coached locally as well. My Mother in law started seriously collecting Baseball cards in the early 70’s. She collected specific players for each of her children. Each child was able to select the player to collect. My wife chose Mike Schmidt, not because of his baseball prowess, but because she thought he was cute. From the time my wife was in Fifth Grade until after we married in the late 80’s My wife only received gifts from her family in the form of baseball cards Every Birthday, Every Christmas all gifts received were Mike Schmidt cards to add to her collection. My Mother in law developed strong relationships with card dealers from all over the country at a time prior to the computer age, by writing letters, making phone calls, and road trips to dealers. They developed such a strong relationship that dealers knew the players she collected and would hold new inventory for her. At times breaking sets. They would pick out the best card and send it to her The cards were mailed to her with an invoice for payment. Once the cards were received they were checked off on her list and immediately went into an album. The cards were never handled. The collection consists of 687 pieces.
