Description: A rare recruitment pamphlet meant to show how respected the soldiers of the new republic were and to encourage new citizens to join the ranks for the government to preserve liberty and equality. It also goes over the money the military would be expected to earn in the coming years to encourage strong morale among troops and to entice new members. This rare pamphlet is one of the first issued governmental pamphlets following the establishment of the National Assembly of revolutionary ideals in 1789. The opening of the pamphlet reads as follows (loosely translated from French into English) “Gentlemen, I am charged with presenting to you a bill to regulate the rewards that citizens deserve, who, by devoting themselves entirely to the defense of the homeland, subject themselves to the most sensitive privations, distance themselves from the most expensive objects, separate themselves from all the sweetness of life to go wherever the interest of society sends them, and who profess to brave perils, pain and death wherever the public thing in danger calls for their courage & their talents to help; but I must point out to you, Meflieurs, that it is a result of the duties of this state, that a military pensioner cannot be compared to any other, except as long as we take into account the miseries and sufferings..” Condition Note: The pamphlet is in good condition, some pages loose, with light foxing. 20 pages, 18mo
