Goldmine Grading System (Edited from Goldmine, Makula's guidelines and EX grade added) MINT (M) Absolutely perfect in every way. Mint should never be used as a grade unless more than one person agrees that the record or sleeve truly is in this condition. (I only use this grade for sealed records.) NEAR MINT (NM OR M-) NM records are shiny, with no visible defects. Records and covers look almost new. When played, there should be almost no surface noise (NM records don't have to be never played; a record used on an excellent turntable can remain NM after many plays if the disc is properly cared for. NM covers are free of creases, ring wear and seam splits of any kind. VG++ or EXCELLENT (EX) Essentially a grade in between VG+ and NM. Records may have one or two visible imperfections, but these will be of a purely cosmetic nature (i.e. sleeve scuffs or other superficial marks) and will not affect play. A VG++ record will have no scratches and play well with little distraction from sound. Covers will be just shy of NM, due to a few too many imperfections. Still very clean and sharp. VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+) VG+ records may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. A record that has been enjoyed but well-cared for. VG+ is the most common acceptable grade for a used record. Records should have no feelable scratches, and no repeating tics or annoying distracting noise when played. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. VG+ covers should have only minor wear. A VG+ cover might have some very minor seam wear, small creases, or shelfwear, but no writing or splits. VERY GOOD (VG) VG records have more obvious flaws than their counterparts in better shape. They lack most of the original gloss found on factory-fresh records. May have visible groove-wear/marks or feelable scratches. When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches may be audible. The music can still be enjoyed, but upon listening, the surface noise is evident, and can occasionally be distracting. Records will not skip, or jump in the groove. VG covers will have signs of human handling. Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might be visible. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it may appear on all three sides, though it won't be obvious upon looking. Someone might have written or it or stamped a price tag on it, too. VG- More noticeable wear/damage/mishandling than VG. Record and cover begin to look abused. Records play through with no skips, but surface noise is a distraction. Good (G) This grade should be reserved for rare, collectible, hard to find records and sold as filler copies. They may skip, and will have distracting noise. Covers have heavy wear, but remain intact. POOR (P) and Fair (F) Less than a (G) record. Essentially the record and cover is intact enough to resemble a copy of the title, but may not be anything that can be enjoyed/listened to. Covers can be missing parts, records with cracks etc.
