The reverse shows the Marian Cross, which represents the close connection of Mary with Jesus’ redemptive mission. The letter “M” below the cross represents Mary’s presence at the foot of the cross. Below the M are the sacred hearts of Mary and Jesus. The twelve stars around the edge of the medal is a reference to the Book of Revelations 12:1 where Mary is described having “a crown of twelve stars.” The Miraculous Medal was created by Saint Catherine Labouré following her vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1830. Mary appeared to St Catherine, a nun, in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity on the Rue du Bac in Paris and gave specific instructions for how the medal should look and promised special graces to those who wear it. Many Catholics believe that wearing the medal with faith can bring special graces through the intercession of Mary at the hour of death.
